Unholy Mess

close-up of practice on the first eleven rounds of the Feather & Fan shawl

This is the real reason that I’ve been putting off starting Feather & Fan¹. Casting on eight laceweight stitches on 3.75mm (#5 Am.) dpn’s is a cruel joke at best². Knitting into double yarn-overs on same is h—ll. I can’t wait to get to the part where I knit into triple yarn-overs.

This is not relaxing knitting, though it does get better after row 13. It begins to resemble lace and not the travails of an overwrought spider.

This is practice yarn, btw. I’m not wasting the good stuff on my clumsiness.

² Pink yarn on magenta aluminum doesn’t help. I’ve ordered rosewood.

Railway Stitch Socks, Done

Gentleman's Sock in Railway Stitch, completedGentleman's Sock in Railway Stitch, detail

I’ve finished them and I’m fighting the urge to do another pair of socks. I’m going to do lace and I’m not sure I’ll concentrate well on both. Socks are good for subway rides and conference calls and staff meetings, though.

You can see the railway stitch better in the detail close-up, though the Shepherd Sock Stripe obscures it somewhat.

Unfortunately the socks, as expected, are still slightly too large, even after washing, and will be finding another home. It was a good experience though. I would lengthen the leg of the socks if doing it again and decrease the number of stitches in each round by five. The idea of taking this down to a 1.75mm (00 Am.) or 1.50mm (000 Am.) would put me off the stitch for good.

You can also see how flat my feet are.

Deary Days

No biking today. Rain, rain, rain. Probably rain tomorrow too. I should go knit.
