Forty-Plus Baby Blanket/Afghan
Posted on Sunday, 1 May 2005, 00:13The name of this exercise has nothing to do with the age of the mother of the recipient. It’s the width and nothing more. I started it on 14″ #7 needles with only a rough guess at the gauge, then moved it onto 14″ circs when it got too unwieldy. It’s a baby blanket, who cares? Well, this baby will be able to use this into her toddler years. Lucky thing.
I started with a provisional cast-on so I could put some lacy fringe at the edge, a la Knitting on the Edge, then alternated sections of garter (24 st) with sections of brioche (24 st) with a knit stitch at either end (needed for the brioche). After 32 rows I switched colors and alternated the garter and brioche sections. Each square stretches in a different direction.
Clearly, I could have survived with 122 stitches instead of 170, but by the time I was sure of it (i.e., when I switched to circs), there was no turning back and it was clear anyway that the baby will be a toddler before I finish this.
The baby is a girl, BTW.
The yarn is Takhi Cotton Classic. The antique pink I got in a trade from Lynne for some of the dreaded alpaca, but I think I’ll have to buy some more. The white is called neutral, but passes for an antique white. I got that at my LYS (no website yet). The Tibetan wool rug is looking fab, despite our neglect, don’t you think?
I will admit there are a few flaws in this, and I admit I had to rip back 8 rows of the white to hide a grievous error, but the mother of the recipient doesn’t knit and isn’t a relative, so it will pass.
